SHORT VISIT TO LIESTAL & BASEL,

--=--Travelling across Europe by train, certain places are Hubs, like Paris or Brussels. Basel in
Switzerland is another. So on this journey, i arrived in Basel just before midday,
i booked in Hotel Victoria for one night, then took the train the short distance
to LIESTAL .

Liestal is 17km [11 miles] from Basel. Population is about 15,000.
The town is twinned with Sacramento California USA. Liestal is an industrial town
with Historic centre, and cobbled streets. It is the capital of the Liestal District.
, largely a German speaking Canton. A feature that i liked was the Oberes Tor [ Tower ] it
is from the 13th century.

from Basel.] ------ Returning to Basel, i had time to see the river Rhine and
the lovely red sandstone building of the Rathaus [ Town Hall] . It is from the 16th
century. --------

----------Basel has three railway stations, GERMAN, FRENCH, and SWISS. The French and Swiss are more or less in the same buildings, with customs and immigration. I can remember in the 1950s, on holiday with my mother, the train arrived in Basel French. Passengers had to disembark to the platform, and walk along the platform to passport control to enter Basel Swiss. The train had moved along for us to rejoin.
